Embracing AI in My Classroom

Posted on 03/18/2024 01:16 PM
In my session, "Hear from Peers: Navigating AI in the Classroom," I address my concerns regarding the preparedness of graduates from Texas A&M University for the competitive world beyond academia. They must be taught both the power and the significant limitations of artificial Intelligence (AI) to truly equip them for success in their future careers. The unchecked and unwise use of AI by students can quickly become counterproductive for them and the educational goals we have for them.

Because I teach very-large-sections as the sole instructor, I am not well equipped to use my course to provide the oversight and mentoring required to teach the proper uses of AI. Instead, I teach my students about the caveats that come with many uses of AI. This objective is in direct response to students in my courses misusing AI to build submissions they then represent to be their own. In addition to the academic integrity violations such actions create, the students often do not realize how they are cheating themselves out of vital opportunities to actually learn the course material.

While not everyone may share my apprehension about AI's impact on student learning, my personal experience has led me to prioritize comprehension over grades. Through my journey as a student, professional, and parent, I've come to understand that success lies in understanding the information we learn, rather than simply striving for good grades. Students often do not recognize AI-generated responses as the illusions of knowledge that they are. Educating the student about the ethical and practical downsides of using AI improperly is the first step toward encouraging proper use of the tool. For that reason, I share resources during my presentation that I’ve developed to help students understand not only when they may or may not use AI in my course, but more importantly, the reasons why.

It's evident that AI has a significant role to play in shaping the future of education and preparing students for success in their careers. By prioritizing comprehension over grades, instilling essential values, and equipping students with AI literacy, we can ensure that they are well-prepared to thrive in a rapidly evolving professional landscape. For a deeper dive into this topic, I invite you to explore the full workshop. Let's embrace the fundamentals of true learning and good character that will help make AI a powerful ally in education and empower the next generation for success.
