Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is an investigation into teaching and learning practices within the context of higher education to provide empirical support for such inquiries. Learn more about how the Center supports instructors with their Scholarship of Teaching and Learning by visiting the STYLE homepage.
IDEATE Community
The Innovation and Design for Exploration and Analysis in Teaching Excellence (IDEATE) community collaboratively conducts research in courses across multiple disciplines to identify and refine both discipline-specific and generally-applicable evidence-based high-impact practices.
IDEALS Lab
The Interdisciplinary Design for Empowerment and Agency through the Learning Sciences (IDEALS) Lab conducts research and faculty development in the Center for Teaching Excellence. The primary purpose of the lab is to support the Innovation and Design for Exploration and Analysis in Teaching Excellence (IDEATE) community and help them design, conduct, and publish Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) research studies. See the IDEAL Lab Model.
Scholarly Teaching
Scholarly teaching is “an intentional practice informed by evidence, research on teaching and learning, well-reasoned theory, and critical reflection. The main goal of scholarly teaching is to maximize learning” (Potter & Kustra, 2011). While distinct from Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) research—which systematically investigates teaching and learning to contribute to the broader educational literature—scholarly teaching draws on SoTL findings to enhance everyday instructional practice.
