An emerging trend among universities is to provide formal mentoring enhancement programs. According to the National Academy Report (2019), “one of the most well-studied and well-known approaches to mentorship education in STEMM” is the curriculum developed by Center for Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER). This is the first research mentor education program to positively impact mentors and mentees (2019).
To promote a culture of mentoring within and across Texas A&M University, faculty can enhance their mentoring capacity using seven evidence-based mentoring competencies developed by CIMER. Each competency workshop utilizes customized case studies and activities and is facilitated by faculty who are trained CIMER facilitators. Designed to maximize faculty interaction and dialogue, these workshops provide a safe environment to share and discuss experiences. Faculty participation can be on a rolling basis.
Faculty who complete all seven competencies will receive a letter of completion from Faculty Affairs and Center for Teaching Excellence.
