Teaching Assistant Training & Evaluation Program

TATEP (Teaching Assistant Training and Evaluation Program) is a Texas A&M University-mandated orientation/training session for all first-time Graduate Teachiing Assistants or GTAs.  It is offered yearly in late August for all graduate students who will have classroom teaching responsibilities in the coming year.  It is also open to graduate students who are do not have teaching appointments at TAMU but do anticipate careers in higher education.  TATEP provides new GTAs with an overview and basic guidelines for their roles and responsibilities as instructors at A&M. The program occurs over two days.

The first day is for new domestic and international GTAs and consists of both large general sessions and small group interactive sessions. The second day is for new International Teaching Assistants and is intended to orient students to the U.S. classroom culture, and help them develop classroom communication and management skills. Topics covered include overviews of the Texas A&M Policy on Sexual Harassment and the Aggie Honor Code, characteristics of the A&M student population, overview of learning styles, effective teaching techniques, establishing an positive teacher-student relationship, and resources and opportunities for further support and training. It is our hope that TATEP will complement teaching orientation and development activities that take place at the departmental level.
