Teaching Portfolio Project

The Center for Teaching Excellence has supported faculty in the development of their teaching portfolios since 1990. The teaching portfolio is a great way to meet university promotion and tenure requirements for documentation of accomplishment in the area of teaching because:

  • it is a faculty initiated document that articulates and illuminates faculty teaching beliefs and practices
  • it provides critical context for teaching related data such as student ratings of faculty, course grade distributions, etc.

There are two ways in which the CTE can assist faculty in the development of their teaching portfolios:

The Teaching Portfolio – Offered multiple times each semester, this 90 minute session provides faculty with an introduction to the Teaching Portfolio as a tool for documenting professional achievement in teaching. The Teaching Portfolio is often a component of the promotion and tenure packet, providing useful information for peer review. Participants will learn the components of the document and a process for portfolio development. Included in the session is an opportunity to begin the reflective process, obtain peer feedback, and develop a schedule for completing the portfolio. For more information, contact Jean Layne at j-layne@tamu.edu or 862-4269.

Teaching Portfolio Individual Consulting - TAMU faculty interested in working on their portfolio can contact the CTE at any time of year and be paired with an Instructional Consultant who will work with them to complete their portfolio. This process usually consists of faculty writing their philosophy statements and collecting artifacts of their teaching and meeting with an Instructional Consultant 2-3 times for feedback on the documents. Electronic interaction/feedback on portfolio drafts is also available.

If you have questions about the teaching portfolio or wish to make an appointment to begin the consultation process, contact Jean Layne at j-layne@tamu.edu or 862-4269.
