Certificate of Completion Program

Graduate students actively involved in Graduate Teaching Academy programs will have the opportunity to obtain a Certificate of Completion from the GTA. The designation of GTA Fellow will be given to any participant who completes the following:

Fall Semester

    1. Participate in 7 of the 10 GTA semina rs offered during the fall semester. The opening and closing events are optional and do not count toward the required 7. Participants must sign the attendance sheet at each seminar they attend to receive credit.

Because we seek to create a community of graduate students, and because the seminars will be interactive in nature, your presence and active involvement ensures maximum benefit for you and for the entire group. However, we recognize that scheduling problems do occur, and for this reason, we will videotape the seminars. For up to 2 of the required 7 seminars, participants in the GTA Certificate of Completion Program may watch the videotape and compose a written evaluation. These evaluations should be submitted to the GTA via email as Microsoft® Word attachments (these summaries do NOT count towards Fall Requirement #2).

    2. Write a reflection essay following 2 of the 7 seminars you attend. In your essay, address such questions as:

      · What did I learn? What was the most important new idea?

      · How will I apply this to teaching I am doing right now or in the future?

      · What incidents or situations from my own educational experience relate to the ideas and principles presented?

      · What questions do I still have? What would I like to learn more about?

Please submit your essays and video summaries to the GTA via email as Microsoft® Word attachments.

Spring Semester

    1. Participate in the GTA Teaching Mentor program:

      a) Enter into a mentor/mentee relationship with any Texas A&M University faculty member other than your committee chair/advisor.

      b) With the help of your mentor, decide upon a set of goals you would like to accomplish during the mentoring program. You may observe a class taught by your mentor or another faculty member recommended by your mentor, but you must observe a minimum of two separate instructors in two separate departments. Complete the GTA classroom observation forms, discuss your observations with your mentor, and submit copies of your observation forms to the GTA via email as a Microsoft® Word attachment.

      d) Meet with your mentor regularly to discuss your observations, your mentor’s teaching philosophies and strategies, as well as your own teaching experiences.

      e) If you are teaching during the spring semester, and your mentor’s schedule allows, we recommend that your mentor observe and provide feedback on your teaching.

    2. Attend the GTA Teaching Portfolio Workshops.

    3. Prepare a personal Philosophy of Teaching statement. A draft of this statement must be prepared prior to the second Teaching Portfolio Workshop. Discuss this philosophy with your mentor and submit a copy of your final draft to the GTA via email as a Microsoft® Word attachment.

    4. Participate in a professional service activity under the guidance of your teaching mentor or the GTA. Complete the professional service activity form, and submit a copy to the GTA via email as a Microsoft® Word attachment.
