TATEP (Teaching Assistant Training & Evaluation Program)
is a Texas A&M University-mandated orientation and training session for first-time
Graduate Assistants Teaching (GATs) in the coming academic year, 2009-2010. It
is offered annually in late August, in the week prior to the beginning of fall
semester. TATEP provides new GATs with an overview and basic guidelines for
their roles and responsibilities as instructors, without overlapping with
departmental training and policies. GATs include graduate students who are
teaching, facilitating labs and/or grading.
The program, which includes both
plenary and group sessions, typically addresses the following topics but is not
limited to: university policies, procedures, and services applicable to
teaching assistants and their assignments, Aggie culture and traditions; multi-cultural
issues; the first day of class and other situations commonly encountered by new
teaching assistants.
TATEP is designed as a one-day program for all GATs, both
domestic and international. GATs will attend on either Wednesday, August 26th
or Thursday, August 27th, depending on which college they are
enrolled in. International GATs will attend an extra session at the end of each
day on “Effective Communication Strategies in the US Classroom.”
