As an English Language Proficiency Consultant for the Center for Teaching Excellence, Brandon Cooper works closely with prospective and current international teaching assistants and faculty to help them achieve the language proficiency standards set by OGAPS and the State of Texas. To this end, he helps to maintain the language laboratory, leads practice groups, holds in private consultations, performs accent analysis, develops individualized improvement plans, and conducts workshops.
Brandon has presented posters and papers on regional and social language variation for conferences and invited talks. He has assisted with a digital humanities project related to American speech and culture and is now lead on a project of his own. He has authored and co-authored papers in linguistics and is currently co-editing a volume on medieval language and literature.
Brandon holds two MA degrees, one in Theology with a biblical languages emphasis and another in English with a linguistics emphasis. Additionally, he has certificates in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and in English Language Teaching Leadership Management. He has done postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge in Modern Hebrew and at Copenhagen Business School in Quantitative Methods. He is currently working on his PhD in Linguistics with the University of South Carolina. Over the last ten years, he has taught both graduate and undergraduate students at the University of South Carolina, Texas A&M, and elsewhere.
